State of the Budget Address
Does this make me miss out on things every once in a while? Yes. But is also gives me peace of mind as I slowly, but surely, watch my savings account get back into "the green" and forces me to find more creative, low-cost fun.
Here is a list of goals I've met so far:
- I have successfully kept up with the 52 Week Money Saving Challenge. We are currently living Week 21 of 2014 (crazy how time flies), which puts me at around $230 give or take a few bucks. I have the money stashed in a super secret place and I am so looking forward to depositing all $1378.00 at the end of the year. I've even been throwing in a few additional bucks here and there whenever I happen to have extra cash, so it will be fun to see how far past that goal I've saved come December. How are all my budget buddies doing out their with your own 52 Week Challenge?
- Through exercising MUCH restraint, I did not buy new clothes until the weather officially plunged from winter into one week of spring and then unceremoniously became summer. I accomplished this mainly by avoiding Anthropogie like the plague and hoping that family members (*cough* Gran *cough*) will be kind to me on my birthday come June.
- I held myself accountable when faced with impulse buy urges. The easiest way to do this is to plan something fun to look forward to. For example, I'm going to the beach over Memorial Day AND flying down to Florida to visit my best friend in August. These are exciting splurges that are also necessary for my mental well-being, so it was super easy to pass on a pedicure in exchange for a plain ticket to sandy beaches.
- I eat out far too much. Sometimes it's so much easier to pick up a cheesy quesadilla from Willy's on the way to rehearsal, rather than stay up late the night beforehand cooking and packing a lunch/dinner. However, if I plan a bit farther in advance this will be an easy fix. I start production on Once Upon A Mattress at Curtain Call Youth Players on June 14th (Shameless Plug: Find registration information here! To all my artistic, creative students and friends grades 6-12 PLEASE check this out and come audition.) I'm setting a goal to pack a home-cooked lunch/dinner every day that I have rehearsal.
That's the only new budget-central goal I'm setting myself for now. I find if I set too many goals I let them all fall by the wayside. One step at a time always works better for me. What goals have you set for yourself this year and what strategies do you use to tackle them?
